Are email newsletters making a comeback in 2026?
Email newsletters are officially back, says Inc. Magazine. Niche newsletters offer a way to build traffic, retain a loyal audience, and cut through social media noise.
Newsletters feel more "like texting your best friend" than the news, and that’s why readers keep coming back, time and time again.
"Emails are in right now. The more than 50-year-old communication tool has gotten cool again..."
-Inc. Magazine
The Wall Street Journal shared, "publishers have lost once-reliable traffic from Facebook, which has news content, and Google, which increasingly offers AI summaries on its search page. Newsletters offer a direct connection with readers as well as an opportunity to sell ads or include a paywall." The latest Paved data shows that marketers spent 30% more on email sponsorships YoY.
According to stats from StoryDoc, 90% of Americans say they’re subscribed to at least one newsletter. The latest research shows that consumers view email newsletters as one of the most trustworthy sources of information. Thanks to the personal reading environment of the inbox, creators often feel like friends or advisors to their subscribers.
Email may be old tech, but the numbers show it’s here to stay.
24 of the world's biggest newsletters, by subscriber count
Here’s what we found about the world’s best newsletters in 2026. There are many ways to qualify a newsletter operation as “big,” whether it’s subscriber count, the business size, the total number of emails sent, or the overall highest revenue.
Since a lot of newsletter data isn’t always public, we’re focusing on audience size per individual publication. We define "the biggest newsletter" as the one with the most subscribers for a single publication. So we've sourced deep dives into the newsletter industry, scoured our databases, and read hundreds of news articles to find the most successful newsletters in the world.
Note: for simplicity, we did not include news aggregators or publications that require an app download or login to receive emails. The newsletters we listed are old-school, ungated publications that only require an email address for signup.
