Customer.io: Ad Network Placement

Learn how to set up the Paved ad network placement in your Customer.io email newsletter.

Before you start

  • Make sure you know how to set up the ad network. Read the Getting Started guide.

  • Navigate to the "Ad Unit Codes" step of the setup wizard in your Paved account to retrieve your header code and ad unit code.

Merge tags for this ESP

Paved will automatically insert the correct merge tags when you select Customer.io from the ESP list in your account. For reference, the tags used are:

  • Email ID: {{customer.email}}

  • Campaign ID: {{campaign.id}}

How to install the header code

In your Paved account, copy the provided header code for your ad placement.

  1. In Customer.io, open or create a campaign and navigate to the email message step.

  2. Select the Code editor.

  3. Paste your full email HTML into the editor.

  4. Locate the </head> closing tag.

  5. Paste your Paved header code directly above the </head> tag.

  6. Click Save.

How to install the ad unit code

  1. In your Paved account, click Copy Code to copy the ad unit code.

  2. In the Customer.io code editor, locate the position in the email body where the ad should appear.

  3. Paste the ad unit code at that location.

  4. Click Save.

Adding the ad to a reusable template

To avoid re-inserting the ad code with every send:

  1. Save the HTML with the Paved ad unit code included as a reusable template.

  2. Select it when building new campaign messages.

Testing your ad placement

Use your ESP's preview to check the visual layout before sending.

⚠ Do not send a test email. Do not use test sends to verify your Paved ad. Test emails often strip or fail to populate merge tags, which will cause a broken ad request. Instead, send a real email to:

  • The Paved draft email address provided in your Paved account

  • Yourself and/or your team

  • Your Paved account manager (if applicable)
